Cubicle 7 Entertainment is pleased to announce that we have signed two licenses with Chaosium Inc in regards to their CALL OF CTHULHU and BASIC ROLEPLAYING game lines.

The first license covers the creation and publication of CALL OF CTHULHU adventures and supplements. The first of these is CTHULHU BRITANNICA which is released in August. This new collection of horror scenarios features five tales of horror and the weird, set within the green and pleasant land of England. Each scenario focuses upon a different time period, from the streets of Victorian London to the far future when End is almost nigh. Although each scenario can be played as part of an existing campaign, they also come with a set of pre-generated player characters, allowing all to be played and run with the minimum of effort. Our CTHULHU BRITANNICA series then continues with FOLKLORE in November. This sourcebook gives life to strange tales and strange places where myth meets mythos in Britain's darkest corners.

Cubicle 7 have also signed a license for the BASIC ROLEPLAYING system which is being used to developed a brand new game based upon the works of a popular award-winning author which we will announcing later in the year.

“We’re delighted to be publishing material for Call of Cthulhu. One of our long-held ambitions is to contribute to this fantastic game,” said Dominic McDowall-Thomas of Cubicle 7. “We’re also very excited to be able to use the Basic Roleplaying system for our upcoming unannounced licensed game – it’s a perfect fit.”

"We've known Angus Abranson for well over a decade and long desired to work together with him on something. Now he's teamed up with Dominic, and formed Cubicle 7 Entertainment, it gives Chaosium great pleasure to award them licenses to publish supplements for Call of Cthulhu as well as BRP books. We're looking forward to a long and successful relationship and many swell Chaosium licensed books to come!" added Dustin Wright of Chaosium.

I’m trying to get back to three strips a week. While I’m still pushed for time, I’ve been really unhappy with the flow of the strip while I pulled it back to twice a week (even if that was only intended as a temporary thing during Louisa’s first year). We’ll see.

In some bad news, Comics Buyers’ Guide has had to cut back on expenses due to the economy, and alas, alack, one of those expenses was Dork Tower. The editor says this is hopefully just a temporary thing, and given the feedback I get from the CBG staff and editors, I’m hoping so as well. Yet, for the first time in ten years, Dork Tower is exclusively a web-only strip. Or “webcomic,” as I guess the kids are saying these days.

This is a paradigm I’ve yet to get used to.

This is also a business model I need to figure out. While I’m notoriously unmotivated by money, the fact that there is now a Daughter involved and a College Fund to be funded puts a spin on things that wasn’t there five years ago.

On the plus side, while there are still massive slowdowns on the Gamespy server, at least the move to the new server is expected to be VERY soon.So hopefully the site should be super-fast and super-spiffy super soon.

To the Hive Mind of [info]edinburgers

Just looking out of my window from the Chrytal Macmillan Building, George Square, I see a yellow helicopter that I think is Royal Air Force and there is an ambulance parked near it. Any clue as to what has happened/is happening?

Yours,

Nosey

Dear edinburgers,

Unfortunately I am leaving the beloved Edinburgh for Glasgow and now have to arrange for my move... was wondering if anyone could advise on a few things

- if my friends volunteer to drive a car for me to move my stuff I guess that would be a question of just renting a car - any cheap place recommended?

- in case the above option doesn't work I'll have to use the services of some firms that provide cars + drivers? I wonder again what these are and how much that would cost

- as I don't have much stuff to move, mostly books and clothes, maybe I could just take a taxi? How much is that?

Thanks!!!

an update: another exotic suggestion - to post some heavy stuff like books! any tips on this?

When I first started going to GenCon, I got to play games wall to wall for four days and it was awesome. These days I spend most of my time working the Green Ronin booth or in meetings. I always try to get in at least one game though, because it wouldn't be GenCon without it. Oftentimes, it's a chance to get together with friends from my college game group. This year former Green Ronin developer Rob Schwalb is going to run a 4th edition D&D game and I need to bring my own character.

Rob is never a man to take the easy way out, so he's running the game for 21st level characters. One night I finally cracked open Player's Handbook II to check out the options there but looking through the powers of the different classes just made my eyes glaze over. I realized then that I did not have the time to dedicate to make a proper character of that level.

So I'm running a contest. Here's how it works:

* Make me a level 21 character you think will be fun to play.

* Magic items of level 22, level 21, level 20, and 225,000 gold pieces.

* Use the character builder or similar to make a character sheet. Pre-figured power cards are a big plus.

* Print the character and mail to the following address:
Green Ronin Publishing
Attn: Chris Pramas
3815 S. Othello St. Suite 100, #304
Seattle, WA 98108

* Characters must be received by August 1, 2009. I will then judge the entries and pick a winner.

* The winner will receive $35 worth of Green Ronin product. This can be print or PDF if you are in the USA, or PDF if you are in another country.

That's it. So what are you waiting for? Make my character!

Anyone doing this? I am starting a new job in Castle Brae, a business park/estate just outside of Dunfermline. The nearest rail is Rosyth Rail and there appears to be some bus symbols around Castle Drive, within the business park, but I've no idea whether those buses go to Edinburgh or not.

If anyone's got experience on this kind of commute, I'd be much obliged for your anecdotes and advice.

http://www.ennie-awards.com/nominations/nominees.asp

A great list - lots of Evil Hat and Mouse Guard and goddamn Rob Schwalb being a genius all over the place.  The man is running half the industry by now.  The SVU game on the best free product list looks awesome - I've put it on my review queue.

And as I worked on an earlier draft of Disciples of the Dark Gods, I guess that's another ENnie nod for me for Product of the Year - woo!

Well I never.

Hot War has been nominated for two Gen Con/EN World ENnie awards.

Crikey!

We've got the nod in the best writing and best setting categories.

Result!

And what is more, Paul gets an additional tip of the hat for his excellent cover for 3:16 Carnage Amongst the Stars. Well done Paul and Gregor!

Now, if we can just 'rock the vote' (as I believe the 'yoof' on the street are saying), we might, just might, get a Scottish win in one of the categories this year.

Cheers
Malc

So, I'm looking into childcare for my daughter starting in November-ish... can anyone recommend (or metion places to avoid) a nursery or childminder in the Craigleith/New Town area? We live between Craigleith and Drylaw in an area that doesn't seem to have a name, my husband works in the New Town and I'll be working in Cannonmills... we want to have bubs be looked after somewhere that's either near work or on the way... any advice, beyond "win the lotto, so one of you can stay home with her"?

Or a link to the post on this sort of thing that was made a few months ago would be helpful-- I couldn't find it in the memories or reading through the months I thought it might be in... (there is one from 2005, but I'm hoping places have improved since then...)

Hello again!

You guys where so helpful last time... but I've got another question for you. I had a look but couldn't find anything about Easter Road. I've found what seems like the prefect flat near a B&Q shop on Easter Road. Is this an ok area? I'm heading down to view it Wednesday... and hopefully pay a deposit.

Thanks again to all the people who offered me places, but I recently found out that the chances of me getting a transfer with Asda are slim... so my budget had to go even lower...

Thanks in advance!

If anyone's thinking of going to any Edinburgh Festival shows this year, I've created a simple tool that lets you post reviews to Twitter and see the most highly (and lowly) rated shows.

It's at edfest09.com.

Any ideas, questions or comments, let me know. Also, if you're a festival organizer, media outlet or other organization who might be interested in taking it on, or know someone who might, drop me an email; my address is in the footer of the site. The design can be changed to fit anything you're already using.

So, I have days where I get wicked stomach problems. And sugar problems. It goes like this:

Sugar rises steadily all day, no matter what I eat, or how much insulin I take.

Stomachache starts.

Sugar begins to drop slowly.

Horrible bout of diarrhea.

Sugar is miraculously normal when I come out of the bathroom.

Let's look at tonights timeline, shall we?

Sugars during the day: 11:50am: 90, 3:30 - 234, 4:30 - 267, 7 - 288
Despite both insulin and exercise, sugar peaks at 327 at 8:30pm after being in the mid-high 200s all day. I take NO insulin because I've taken so much already it feels stupid to take more.

Hubby and I order dinner from Outback. I run to pick it up. I start having stomach/intestinal cramps in the car.

9:20: before I eat, I test. Suddenly down to 249. Take enough insulin to cover the 1/2 roll I eat with my chicken.

10:30: I literally run to the bathroom. Spend about 20 minutes there. Come out, sugar is 130.

This has been going on for about a year now. I have to test religiously for the next 1-2 hours (instead of going to bed) because it's very likely I will go low. My issue is -- WTF does my stomach have to do with this? Today was just an example, this happens to me AT LEAST once a month. And no, not always at THAT time of the month. And diarrhea is a problem of mine, but it doesn't always happen during high sugars, and I'm not always lower after. It's just this combined set of circumstances is now very predictable and I'm wondering what the connection could be. All of my pump sites are on my stomach, but I can't see how that would matter.

Any ideas?

I realise this is a long shot, but figured I'd make an enquiry anyway.

A Canadian associate of mine is considering coming to Edinburgh between 14-20 August - right in the middle of the Festival madness, naturally! Hotels are usually booked up well before now, and the few that are left are prohibitively expensive. I'd let him stay at my place but it's my son's first birthday celebrations and my small flat will already be stuffed to bursting!

So...does anyone have, or know of a room he might rent out for the time he's considering? Or any tips on cheap hotels/hostels/apartments that might be of use? He's happy to stay anywhere so long as it's reasonably quiet and he doesn't have to actually share the room. I can vouch for the guy being very pleasant, sensible and personable - he's an older professor at a reputable Canadian university, and a really interesting, nice person.

Any ideas would be well appreciated!

Thanks,

Gill x

Finncon is fini. Parris and I have just staggereed back to our hotel room from the dead reindeer party. The party is still going strong and we would love to have stayed longer... till sunset, at least... but we have to be up early tomorrow to catch a ferry to Estonia, where I'll be doing a signing in Tallinn. Then the next day it's back across the sea to Helsinki again, just long enough to set off for Turku, where I've got another signing.

Finncon was terrific. The warmth and hospitality we've found here has completely ruined my image of Finland as a frozen wasteland. Who knew? The sauna was fun too. And then there were all the cute anime girls in costume offering free hugs...

Thanks to all my Finnish friends. Now off to Estonia!
